Wedding vow renewal at Rhulani: with an axe and a broom

  • February 19, 2018 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Valentine's Day is the day of love that was used by a guest couple from Brazil to renew the marriage vows with us.

The ceremony was prepared on a quiet, shady spot.

Our guests chose the setting in the midst of the African bush for the special day. Our staff slipped it into local, traditional clothing and painted their faces.

Not far from the lodge, the ceremony was prepared on a quiet, shady spot. Just around lunchtime, ranger Tsholo drove the couple there, in beautiful sunshine.

Cynthia acted as the priest. She was reading texts from the Bible and renewed the promise of marriage. According to the local Tswana culture, the uncle (Ernest) had to be present with an axe and the aunt (Trasor) with a broom. The tools were handed over to the spouses in the ceremony as a symbol of what work they will do in the common household.

Likewise typical features of the local culture are the colors, the cheerfulness and the singing. With champagne, dancing and guitar sounds from our intern Pachi the special event came to an end.
