A fun “Big5 drive” with Captain Redbeard

  • July 28, 2022 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

On the daily safaris with ranger Alasdair, spectacle and fun are guaranteed. So also this afternoon. The guests are in a good mood and get ready on the vehicle of "Captain "Redbeard". "Hello, what do you want to see today?" he asks. "Today we want to see all of the Big 5 on a single drive!" somebody says from the back seats. Laughter on the vehicle. "Absolutely not!" says Alasdair while he starts the engine.

There is a Leopard in the tree!

The Lions haven't moved since this morning

Difficult to find no Elephants

"I just want to drive comfortably through the park, enjoy nature and see what's coming," Alasdair says. "I certainly don't drive after the big animals like a rowdy.”

First stop is near Rhulani, at Inkwe Pan. Here a giraffe and a couple of zebras are drinking water. Beautiful scenery. Alasdair points to a tree in the distance and makes a joke: "There you have the leopard in the tree, hahaha".

The guests enjoy watching the zebras, but now Alasdair is suddenly taken aback and takes the binoculars. "I can't believe it. There really is a leopard in the tree, no joke!" None of the guests can see it. Alasdair drives to the tree, and indeed. The hardest tier of the Big5 to find is there.

Everyone is overwhelmed. "That's a great start. Now only four are missing, Captain Redbeard!"

The journey continues. A while later, a rustle in the bushes. There are buffalo! They're not easy to find either. A small herd is hidden here. "That doesn’t count, you can hardly see them," Alasdair objects. It doesn't matter, it still counts as a sighting.

Alasdair makes a promise: "From now on I will try my best not to find any of the Big 5 anymore". One of the guests remarks that one could actually go back to the same place of this morning where a couple of lions were resting. Hmmm …. In Madikwe not only the lion is king, but also the guest. Alasdair has no choice and goes to that place again.

Lo and behold. The lazy lions didn't move a meter! They are still lying in the dry grass in the shade. So that would be 3 out of 5.

Alasdair promises that under no circumstances will he look for elephants. But how is that possible when the reserve is teeming with elephants? You literally see them on every safari. And it doesn't take long and there's an elephant. No two, three, one after the other!

The sun is on the horizon. Rhulani’s guests have glasses in hand and enjoy sundowners. "Four out of five, Alasdair, congratulations!" The experienced ranger replies: "And I promised you not to find them all, the rhino is missing."

A bit later we are back in the lodge. Alasdair keeps his promise. He doesn't find any rhino on the way. An entertaining and fun ride is over.

As Alasdair takes the cooler boxes out of the car, he hears the voice of one of the guests: "Alasdair, there's a rhino standing by the waterhole." It's a huge adult white rhino.

Alasdair has therefore not kept its promise. All five were seen tonight. And it gets even worse for him. During dinner, a black rhino passes the watering hole in total darkness. Strictly speaking, only the black rhino is one of the Big 5, not the white rhino.

A busy day at Rhulani comes to an end at the camp fire. Let's see what surprises there are tomorrow!
