A mysterious snake track

  • October 10, 2022 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

As every afternoon, Rhulani's ranger Dean drives through the bush in search of the wild animals until he discovers a noticeable snake track that can be seen from afar. "The snake track was in the sand above the vehicle track," says Dean. "So let’s go there and have a look." And Dean finds a little surprise there...

A mysterious snake track

The track is a few meters long and has a few turns. Exactly in the form of a snake moving forward. Yes, you could almost say the trail itself looks like a snake.

But Dean is amazed when he takes a closer look at the track. There's an animal in there!

"But it's not a snake," notes Dean. "Nevertheless, a slender animal with a long body and a long tail."

No doubt it's a Lizard. Astonishing! Did this lizard make this track, or chose this snake track to be able to lie down in the sun with some protection?

Dean pulls out the Lizard for a closer look. Guests are amazed to see such a thing, which is rather unusual for a safari. Dean who is an expert isn't entirely sure what species it is.

But in the end the secret is revealed. It's a black-lined plated lizard. A peculiar species. Because these can grow up to 45 cm long, with the tail making up 70% of the total length.

The bush always produces something new for us!
