April update: Two absolute highlights in the bush

  • May 07, 2018 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Beautiful wildlife viewing and a pleasant, autumnal climate accompanied us through the month of April. Two big cats, lions and leopards, provided an absolute highlight, that one encounters only very rarely. Welcome to our monthly report from the bush.

April statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

Highlight 1: Mating leopards

Our guests were amazed as they discovered four tiny, brand new cubs amidst the pride of lion that was resting in the bush. The little cats were already curiously looking out from the hiding place. Under the protection of their mother they already began to discover the world. While lions can be seen very frequently with us (in April with a chance of 73% per game drive) such a sighting was unparalleled.

Leopards are more difficult to find than lions, and last month's success rate was relatively low at 10%. The more beautiful were the observations. We saw a leopard mother and her cub more than once, as they climbed the tree, or when they were at a kill. The "sighting of the year", as our Rangers said, were two mating leopards, which we were able to observe from best viewing position during their enjoyable rendez-vous (see more here).

The elephant remained the most watched animal from the "Big 5" in April, with a 85% chance per safari. Rhinos were also common: white rhino 42%, black rhino 4%.
