First cheetah birth in the history of Madikwe Game Reserve

  • February 29, 2020 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

This is the news we have been waiting for and it is a small sensation for Madikwe Game Reserve. For the first time in the park's 29-year history, we can report the birth of a cheetah. The ambitious project, which was marked by some setbacks, was finally successful.

At Rhulani Safari Lodge have made significant financial resources available in recent years to give support to park management in the efforts to get a reproduction of this beautiful wildcat in the wild. “Cheetahs are very vulnerable animals, and in a "Big 5" reserve it is practically impossible to build up a stable cheetah population”, says Rhulani’s owner Rolf Steiner.

The female cheetah was found in the eastern side. A little later, the joyous news spread like wildfire. “It is with great excitement to notify you all that the Red tag Female Cheetah has dropped her cubs last night”. At the same time, the necessary caution and distance is now required to protect the animal. “This is a very sensitive situation for the next couple of days as she is still very young and inexperienced in dealing with this,” informs park management.

Rhulani's head ranger Sean Townsend is also very excited. " It is the female we released two years ago," he says. "But we do not know much yet. We have seen one cub by now that came out of the den."

We will definitely keep you up to date.
