October update: All nine wild dog pups are still alive

  • November 17, 2015 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

At the end of the dry season our balance of interesting animal sightings is fantastic. An update from the bush from last month.

October statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

All nine wild dog pups are still alive

In October, we made 62 safaris into Madikwe and have seen all from the famous "Big 5" quite frequently. On almost each drive we saw elephants, which occur in large numbers, and which are likely to be found at the few watering holes, especially in winter. Also, the white rhino and the buffalo we discovered in more than half of our tours (61% / 64%). Interestingly, we found a leopard more often than in the previous month (21%). This is always a  very special experience for our guests and for our ranger.

Beside the big five, we had some other very special sightings: lions on a wildebeest kill, lions killing a buffalo (see the movie here), baboons, cheetah on a kill, lions on gemsbok kill, civet, lions on zebra kill, just to mention some of them. When driving home at night,  we saw African wild cat and genet, which are difficult to spot.

The great news is that the wild dogs still have all nine of their pups. Read more about the young wild dogs here.

Not a great picture but a great sighting at night: an African wild cat
