Rhulani Insights 015 - Game views: an impressive elephant bull

  • September 21, 2014 | Rolf Steiner

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Finally we are ready to go into the bush to look for wild animals. Is there anything more beautiful than to enjoy nature on a such a lovely day, to relax, breathe fresh air, and to be surprised of all what you see?

Game views: an impressive elephant bull

Rhulani organizes twice per day a safari of approximately 3 hours each in the Madikwe Reserve, the so-called "game drives". The first one is early in the morning at sunrise, and the second one later in the afternoon, at sunset. These are the times when the animals are active and it is therefore more likely to find them.

In today's episode we meet the first animal. It is an impressive elephant bull, who calmly passes by just in front of our vehicle. It is a moment that for many of our guests will never forget.

Chris tells us about the situation of the elephants of Madikwe. There are nearly a thousand of this "Big Five" animal, and thus it is very likely to encounter at least one of them during a safari trip. However, Madikwe is a big reserve of 75,000 hectares, so that you still sometimes need a bit of patience.

“Nature's great masterpiece, an elephant; the only harmless great thing.” – John Donne, Poet

Stay tuned for next episode on Sunday 5 October 2014, when we make a stop at a herd of impalas.
