Rhulani Insights 142 – Talking about Dung Beetles

  • May 24, 2020 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

In today's blog, we meet funny residents of the Madikwe Game Reserve: a dung beetle couple busily rolls a ball across the savannah. Why are they doing this?

Dung beetles on a safari are very common. Just have a look at the ground when you take a break in the bush, and you will maybe discover them as they are rolling a nicely shaped, round ball of dung, and they do not get disoriented because of bumps or obstacles.

In a wonderful evening sunlight we find two dung beetles with Martin. Our experienced ranger tells us more about these little animals. He knows exactly who is doing all the work and what the ultimate goal is.

“Read enough about the dung beetle, and a picture of its character emerges: patient, optimistic, uncomplaining.” – Elif Batuman, American Author

Stay tuned for the next episode on Sunday 7 June 2020 when we talk with Sean about Rhulani’s water management.
