Rhulani Insights 194 – Flies in the tree

  • February 26, 2023 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Very close to a dead elephant we observe that the trees are full of flies. Is that a coincidence? Alright, let's visit this place with our insect expert Dean.

The flies find enough food on the dead elephant to nest in the nearby trees and rest in the shade. In the tree we discover thousands of flies and larvae, so when you shake the tree there is a black cloud in the sky.

“None of God's creatures absolutely consider'd are in their own nature contemptible; the meanest fly, the poorest Insect has its Use and Vertue.” – Mary Astell, English writer

Stay tuned fort the next episode on 12 March when we are looking in Rhulani for our bushbuck resident
