Book this once-in-a-lifetime experience for you and your travel companions where you will make an important contribution to the protection of rhinos in Madikwe Game Reserve (*)
The activity is conducted either in the morning or in the afternoon as part of a regular game drive. At the meeting point you will be introduced to the conservation team of the reserve the veterinarian and the helicopter pilot.
You will get an introduction to the challenge of rhino poaching, which unfortunately also affects us in Madikwe Game Reserve, the different protection concepts, and there will be a briefing about the planned activity: the so-called "rhino notching".
Then there is action: You will witness the search for a rhino via helicopter, from where the animal is darted and immobilized. Now you can approach the animal on the ground.
The work begins and your active participation is required: Blood is taken, samples from the horn and the tail, and, with a bit of luck, you manage to implant a micro-chip through the thick skin of the rhino. The vet will then cut (“notch”) the rhino's ears in a unique pattern so that it can be identified in the future.
Finally, you will give the rhino the injection to wake it up and you will see it disappear back into the bush.
Duration: 1-2 hours (during game drive)
Cost: ZAR 66’000 for the group
