We called him “Disco”

  • December 14, 2023 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Admittedly, bugs and insects aren't for everyone, and our guests don't usually come to Rhulani because of them. Today, however, we are dedicating a short story to a visually fantastic specimen, but let's listen to our insect expert Dean himself about how these spectacular images came about.

Marbled emperor moth caterpillar - in UV light

"Disco" is well camouflaged

“I found this particular caterpillar while I was out on safari, well camouflaged on a silver cluster leaf tree,” says Dean. This insect is particularly good at hiding in the leaves of this tree.

Dean actually knows every little and special insect very well and can talk about them for hours, but this time he wasn't entirely sure. And so he took it with him, well stored in a collection jar, which an insect fanatic naturally always has with him in his camera bag.

Back in Rhulani, the mystery was solved with the help of specialist books. It is a “marbled emperor moth caterpillar”. This tiny caterpillar hatches after just a few days and then eats continuously until is has grown to a length of about 6.5 cm. It is quite colourful but nevertheless well-camouflaged. Learned something new again!

The photographic miracle was created at night under the UV light that the rangers otherwise use to search for scorpions. We were all amazed. Isn’t it just wonderful?

“We then called him ‘Disco’,’” says Dean.
