A wild dog kill between the conference room and reception

  • October 28, 2017

What a wake up call for Rhulani’s guests on Saturday, October 28, 2017. At the lodge entrance, right between the conference room and the reception, a wild dog pack killed an impala. A sighting you will not get every day!

Just a few days ago, we reported on the "highlight of the year", when a leopard killed a warthog right next to our vehicle (see here). And now this happens.

Madikwe has the reputation to be the home for wild dogs. However, there is currently only one pack of 13 dogs roaming around. They consider the 750,000 hectares of the reserve as their territory. Accordingly, it is very difficult to find them, and many guests will not even get to see this highly endangered animal.

For a few days, the wild dogs have settled in Rhulani, so they seem to feel comfortable. In total, they have killed 4 impalas so far, typically in the dark, next to a guest chalet. In the morning nothing was left of the prey, all was eaten, even the bones, maybe by hyenas. Today, the kill took place for the first time in daylight, in front of the eyes and cameras of all our guests and staff. It seems that Rhulani is the wild dogs new favorite restaurant.
