Meet the Rhulani Big 5 – The Rangers behind the magic
Every safari at Rhulani Safari Lodge revolves around Africa's legendary Big 5. Guests arrive hoping for that unforgettable lion sighting, the elusive leopard in a tree, or the gentle giant elephant crossing the road. But while the wildlife may be the headline act, we have a Big 5 of our own who make every game drive a memorable experience. Our team of five professional rangers each brings a unique personality, style and passion to the bush.
After careful observation (and perhaps a little friendly debate around the campfire), we've come to the conclusion that each of them has a remarkable resemblance to one of Africa's iconic Big 5.
Ladies and gentlemen, allow us to introduce the Rhulani Big 5.
Ralf – The Buffalo
If there's one ranger who perfectly embodies the African buffalo, it's Ralf. With Ralf, what you see is exactly what you get—honest, genuine and refreshingly straightforward. He's dependable, loyal and always ready for whatever the day brings.
But don't let the calm exterior fool you. Much like a buffalo peacefully grazing before deciding enough is enough, Ralf can go from zero to one hundred in the blink of an eye. Whether it's reacting to an unexpected wildlife encounter or keeping everyone on their toes with his quick wit, he certainly knows how to make an impression.
Solid, reliable and never afraid to stand his ground—that's our buffalo.
Alasdair – The Elephant
Every herd needs an elephant, and Alasdair wears the role with pride. Like the largest land mammal, he carries himself with quiet confidence and remarkable humility. He's always in a good mood, wonderfully chilled and has an infectious enthusiasm that guests immediately warm to.
Of course, elephants are also known for making themselves heard, and Alasdair is no exception. Whether sharing fascinating stories about the bush or enjoying a laugh with guests, his voice is often as memorable as his knowledge.
And just like an elephant, he doesn't take any nonsense. Kind-hearted? Absolutely. Push him too far? Best not. Strong, wise and impossible not to like.
Willem – The Leopard
The leopard has always been the independent member of the Big 5, and Willem fits the description perfectly.
Comfortable in his own company, happy doing his own thing and never one to seek the spotlight, Willem quietly goes about his work with confidence and precision. Like spotting a leopard in the wild, the more time you spend with him, the more you appreciate his calm nature, sharp instincts and understated sense of humour. He doesn't need to be the loudest person on the vehicle to leave a lasting impression. Some things simply speak for themselves.
Dean – The Black Rhino
The black rhino is often the quiet achiever of the bush, and Dean shares that same quality. He isn't one for unnecessary fuss or fanfare. Instead, he quietly gets on with the job, always ready when he's needed and always exactly where he should be.
Like the elusive black rhino, Dean has a reassuring presence. You may not always hear him first, but when the moment calls for action, he's there—calm, dependable and fully committed.
Proof that sometimes the strongest personalities don't need to make the most noise.
Thato – The Lion
Some things are simply meant to be. Thato's zodiac sign is Leo, so becoming the lion of the Rhulani Big 5 felt almost inevitable.
Confident without being boastful, naturally charismatic and comfortable taking the lead, Thato has the calm authority that makes both guests and colleagues feel at ease. He knows when to step forward and when to let nature tell its own story.
Like every great lion, he enjoys the occasional well-earned rest too—but when it's time to perform, he's always ready. The king of the Rhulani bush? We certainly think so.
One Team. One Passion.
While these comparisons are all made with a smile, there's one thing our Rhulani Big 5 have in common that's even more important than their animal alter egos—a genuine passion for sharing the magic of the African bush.
Each ranger brings a unique personality, a wealth of knowledge and an unwavering commitment to creating unforgettable safari experiences. Together, they transform every game drive into a journey filled with wildlife, laughter, fascinating stories and memories that last a lifetime.
So, the next time you visit Rhulani Safari Lodge, don't just tick off Africa's famous Big 5.
Be sure to meet the Rhulani Big 5 as well. They may not have horns, tusks or manes, but they're every bit as unforgettable.
