David and Goliath at the waterhole

  • December 30, 2021 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

The check-out is already done, the car is ready for departure. Marie-Louise and Peter's three-day visit to Rhulani has come to an end. What remains are wonderful memories and spectacular safari experiences. One last look at the watering hole, where a big elephant has joined. We want to have a closer look before leaving. So let’s walk through the 30 meter long tunnel to the underground hide.

There is enough space for both at the waterhole

The Warthog is dancinng around the Elephant

“This is just amazing,” says Marie-Louise. “We can smell the elephant by the wind that came through the the narrow window. He is so close that we could see every single one of his tail hairs».

But the Elephant bull is not alone during the drinking break. Marie-Louise says: "Suddenly we discover a small, nimble Warthog on the other side of the waterhole." Sometimes elephants start to flutter their ears and trumpet to let the other animals know who's the boss here. But this time the elephant continues to drink calmly, sip by sip, always keeping an eye on the much smaller guest.

The Warthog dances from side to side, runs around the pond and doesn't seem to be afraid of the elephant. "Once the two dissimilar animals even stand face to face, as if they want to challenge each other to a duel," says Marie-Louise. Like David versus Goliath.

The funny spectacle goes on on for a few minutes. A wonderful final highlight of the vacation. But then it is time to say goodbye. Marie-Louise and Peter get in the car and drive off towards Johannesburg Airport. They will definitely come back.
