Why Zebra and Wildebeest are Best Buddies

- Staff, Wildlife

You might wonder why Zebras and Wildebeests (Gnus) love to hang out together in the African savanna. You see them together at the Great Migration in Kenya and Tanzania and also here in Madikwe Game Reserve in South Africa. Find out why Zebra and Wildebeest are best buddies.

Food – Grass Length

One reason is that Zebras love to eat the taller grass and Wildebeest the shorter grass – it’s a kind of symbiosis. There is no competition regarding food and everyone is happy.

Warning of impending Danger

Also, Wildebeests have the better sense of hearing, while Zebras can see very well. It’s always great to have an ally that can warn you in case of any impending danger.

Safety in Numbers

Another reason is that Zebras and Wildebeests love the open African savannas – in comparison to Kudus or other antelopes that prefer the thicker bush. Being out in the open obviously makes these two antelope species very vulnerable – therefore they are teaming up and are best buddies.

Spot Zebras and Gnus on your Safari in Madikwe

When you spot a group of Zebras on your safari in Madikwe Game Reserve keep an eye out for Wildebeests (Gnus) as well. One of them might be just around the corner. So look out for these “best friends” during your next game drive at Rhulani Safari Lodge.
