A free buffalo meal

  • December 03, 2020 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

"When Alasdair and I decided to go on a little tour today, he made a joke," says his Ralf. Both are experienced rangers at Rhulani. "Now we are going to find a male lion that eats a buffalo". Laughter. Here we go…

A little later on this drive the two buddies actually found the picture they had spoken of. What a coincidence!

The predator lay nicely hidden in the shade and visibly enjoyed eating its prey. It was a buffalo which, according to Alasdair, had died of old age and was then found by this lion. "It was a free buffalo meal," says Ralf. Male lions have a reputation for generally not being the most active for hunting. So the reputation was confirmed here.

But which lion was that? It was one that we don't see that often. "Let me think … Ah, now I know, it was the so-called ‘Bolokega Male’”, says Ralf.
