April update: Wild dog, cheetahs and leopards hunting

  • May 04, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Beautiful days accompanied us and our guests through the month of April, including a pleasant Easter period. For many guests it was holiday season, and thus the opportunity to take a trip to the African bush. The nights are now a little cooler, but no one is disturbed, because dinners at the boma fire under the African starry sky are still possible, and the sleep quality in the cooler room is just perfect. Here is our April update.

April statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

Not a Big 5, but beautiful and very frequently seen: a giraffe

However, the most attractive aspect of a safari with us is the high quality of animal observations. Our rangers have meticulously recorded every day in an excel sheet, to give us a view on which animals were discovered on the morning and on the afternoon game drive.

We experienced "action and excitement" on our vehicle when we saw, on different days, a wild dog pack, two cheetahs or a leopard, that were just about to chase a prey. We managed to follow those predators for a while, hoping to see them making a kill. Unfortunately, we were not successful and were reminded, that you have to be very lucky…

Smaller discoveries are among the big successes as well. In April, we saw three times an aardwolf, which is a nocturnal animal, very shy, and difficult to see. We also discovered a serval with a captured gineafowl in its mouth. In the dark night the good eyes of Rhulani's rangers spotted a bush baby in the tree, a chameleon and a spotted genet.

Like every month here the statistics of the "Big 5", where there were no significant changes in the success rates compared to previous months. The large mammals were discovered with the following probabilities on each drive: elephant 98%, lion 82%, white rhino 58%, buffalo 48% and leopard 8%. The giraffe (61%) and the black-backed jackal (48%), which is very typical of Madikwe, also had great success rates.

Elephants - seen on almost every game drive
