June update: bush dating of the cheetahs as the highlight

  • July 05, 2018 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

We will remember the past month for many reasons. Winter has arrived. In the morning you have to dress now warmly for the safaris. The sunsets in Madikwe are unforgettable. And then we had an unexpected cheetah meeting. Welcome to our June review from the bush.

Our baby rhino is getting bigger and bigger

June statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

June highlight: Female cheetah meets the males

First, a sad news. One of the mighty lions, we called him "Chimbro Male", who had his territory in our region, was involved in a fight where he got seriously injured and died shortly after.

We have already reported on the cheetah meeting in detail (read here). Finally, one of the three females that was released in the reserve at the beginning of the year met with the males. The hope for cheetah reproduction has never been so great!

Let’s have a look at the Big-5 statistics, where we got the usual picture. The large elephant population in Madikwe makes it possible for our guests to see this largest land-living mammal on almost every game drive. The probability in June was 97%. This is followed by lion (60%), white rhinoceros (59%), buffalo (36%) and finally leopard (16%).

We are eagerly watching the little baby rhinoceros and baby lions grow up. We find these animals, which are dear to our hearts, quite often, well protected by their mothers.
