June Update: Renovations, rain and a honeybadger

  • July 02, 2016 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

June was an exceptional month in our safari operation. In the second half of the month, we had some amazing sightings, and in the first half Rhulani, was closed for major renovations.

June statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

A honeybadger - a true safari highlight

Some beautiful lion sightings happened in June

For this reason, the statistics of our monthly animal observations are not as meaningful as usual. For example, special animals like leopard, cheetah and wild dog were found with probabilities below 10% per game drive, which is very uncommon. But we found the brown hyena or the black-backed jackal in every third game drive, which is above average.

The representatives of the famous Big 5 showed values which were similar to those in the previous months: elephant (78%), buffalo (76%), lion (56%) and white rhinoceros (43%). So, our guests often saw all four of them on a single drive.

Rhulani’s guests remember above all some beautiful moments with lions. Once they roared loudly next to our car, we often saw a lion-mother with her cubs, and we found them eating on a kill.

A very special sighting was the honeybadger. This inconspicuous little animal is very dangerous, almost as much as the "Big 5". An absolute highlight.

In the dry winter months, it is generally easier to track animals. There is less grass and less green bushes, which improves visibility across the savannah. Finding the animals in the drought is also easier as they often go to the major water dams.

But as always, the exception confirms the rule: We had two days of rain. We do not recall that this has ever happened in June!
