My funny story: The unwanted spider warning

Funny everyday life stories from the bush: Rhulani's owner Rolf tells how a well-intentioned bedtime story became a nightmare.

Rolf tells his funny story today

The conflictive bedtime story: "How Anansi became a Spider"

"In Rhulani we surprise our guests with a bedtime story before they go to sleep. A well-known African bush tale nicely pürinted on a rolled-up paper is placed on the guest's pillow.

This little attention is very much appreciated, but I remember that evening when we had Italian guests in camp who were on their honeymoon, and did not speak a word of English.

Back in the room late in the evening, our guests found our well-intentioned story on the pillow. This evening its was called "How Anansi became a Spider". It is about a clever farmer named Anansi, who accidentally killed the finest ram of the king on his field, and who is turned into a spider by the king at the end of the story.

Unfortunately, our Italian guests could not read a word and thought it was an important message from the management, as they noticed a clipart showing a big, black spider, which was printed to match the story.

Our guests were terrified as they thought there was a bad spider warning. Frightened, they pulled the mosquito curtain and hid under the blankets, unable to close their eyes that night, until the next morning the confusion cleared up.

For me, this is an unforgettable anecdote that shows that even the simplest, well-intentioned gestures have their problems!"
