November update: Great sightings and first rain

- News, Activities, Wildlife, Ranger's Blog

November was an exciting month. At Rhulani, we had our first rain. Highlights in the bush are the 3 young lion cubs, and we also saw some very rare antelopes.

November update

November was an extremely good month for us and all our guests. The long and dry winter period is over, and we finally had our first rain. However, it came with a huge storm which brought us more than 40 milliliters of water in a very short time, and which caused us some damage. A real deluge. But now the color of nature changes from yellow to green.

On our game drives, there were some amazing sightings. Firstly, we saw the three new little bundle of joy from one of the female lion. At that stage, beginning of the month, the cubs were only 4 weeks old. On another day, we saw them with their mother on a wildebeest kill.

Then we found wild dogs on a kill, leopard on an old lions buffalo kill and dragged in up into a tree, African wild cat, male lion on buffalo kill, springhare, our local leopard Samson hunting warthog (unfortunately he missed), bushbabies (very uncommon in certain areas in the reserve), genet and African wildcat. We also discovered two extremely rare antelope: an Eland and the gemsbok.

Regarding the “Big 5”, we saw all of them. The hardest to find were black rhino (4%) and leopard (26%), but from all the others we got excellent visuals in more than 50% of our game drives. The top sighting is the elephant which could be seen on almost all drives (98% probability).
