The cheetah mother had killed an impala

  • November 29, 2020 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

"The north of the park is very wet and some of the roads are closed because of the good rain we had, so we decided to work on the southern side," says Ralph, Rhulani’s field guide. A good choice, because actually a lot of different animals are currently gathering there. So Ralph found the Cheetah mother with the four little ones who had killed an impala. An absolute highlight.

Ralph tells: “When I drove off with my guests, I already decided to look for the cheetahs. I thought I would maybe find them in that area.

But first I came across fresh lion tracks and tried to follow them until a colleague called me in over the radio. The cheetahs weren't really far, and even better, they were very close to the road. We do not want to expose the young cheetah family to stress, so we are not allowed to go off-road to take a close look at them.

The mother cheetah had caught one of the nimble, slim impalas. A feast for the whole family. It was absolutely beautiful, as she was right next to the road in the open, so we could take some lovely photos.

It’s actually amazing to see how quick the four cubs are actually growing. On the photo, one of them looks almost like an adult. They have already started to lose that silver back which they get when they are young. This makes the young look almost like a honey badger, which then keeps the predators away from them.”

This was a unique sighting this morning. And a little later, Ralph found a beautiful male lion, just as he had suspected.
