The drumming was heard in every corner of Madikwe

  • May 13, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

It was again a clear night and a new edition of the event three months ago. On the 10th of May 2017, interested guests of Madikwe Game Reserve joined the "Full Moon Drumming Circle" to raise awareness about the rhino poaching challenge and raise funds for our counter-poaching unit.

Burning fire under the full moon

A cool, starlit night and full moon in the middle of the African bush. A large fire illuminates the bizarre scenery, where about 50 safari guest gather together from different directions. Rhulani Safari Lodge also joins with four guests.

Despite late hour and cool temperatures: no one is tired, and no one freezes. The excitement and the special atmosphere draw the guests into their spell.

The special setting is a repeat of the event three months ago (see here). One should foster awareness of a major challenge of South African wildlife: the protection of our endangered rhino.

The topic is particularly of concern for the Madikwe Reserve, where some rhinos have recently fallen victim to poachers, and the population is shrinking.

Suddenly, the quiet of the dark night was interrupted by a loud drumming. A clear Appeal: "Stop the senseless killing of rhinoceroses". Drumming was heard in every corner of the reserve. Hopefully, the wind carries the message to the whole of South Africa, to the whole world.

The event was organized by Ezelle van Dyk and held in Ambush Alley. Bongani Guduza was leading through the evening, out of the kindness of his heart, with traditional age-old African drumming techniques, singing dancing and story-telling.

For each participant the initiative was an unforgettable experience. A serious subject, an indescribable setting, and with balancing entertainment. Our landcruiser returned to Rhulani late after midnight.
