What makes the difference between a good and a spectacular safari

  • November 19, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

What makes a game drive really special? Is it the feeling of finding oneself in the endless expanse of nature? Is it the silence? Is it the possibility to see wild animals up close? Is it the constant tension, what you will see next?

I recently found this video from a game drive with Rhulani Safari Lodge. It shows a lonely elephant calmly approaching our vehicle. He is getting closer and closer. I remember the tension that prevailed among our guests. And I still remember this unique experience today.

The reasons why this is an unforgettable moment are very diverse. If you basically love nature and perfect peace, a safari will never be disappointing, even if there is a period when no wild animal is seen.

But I watched the video again. I noticed the commentary from our Rhulani ranger Sean in the background. In a calm voice, he gives all guests fascinating information about elephants, their social structure, their behavior and much more. It was not just a simple rendition of the theory learned from books. It was a perfect match with the special situation that awaited us here with the giant bull elephant approaching us.

Sean's calm voice also created an ambience of confidence and serenity. Guests, who before the start of the safari still had respect for getting so close to the wild animals, were able enjoy the special moment quite relaxed. The great practical experience of a ranger in such situations is essential for a successful safari.

After closing the video, I have no doubts: A safari is always good, but it is the ranger that turns it into a spectacular, unforgettable experience. Guests often stay in contact with their ranger after the stay, and on a next visit they ask for same ranger again.

It is the ranger makes the difference.
