Baby Animals in Madikwe – Part IV: Baby Zebras

- Staff, Wildlife

Part IV of our Baby Animals in Madikwe Series: Baby Zebras. During the last weeks, I have seen lots of pregnant Zebras and little Baby Zebras – sadly, some of the Babies fell prey to Lions or Leopards.

Baby Zebras in Madikwe Game Reserve

Besides Lion Cubs, mini Warthog Piglets or Baby Elephants you can also spot Baby Zebras in Madikwe. Last time I saw one of them on safari with Rhulani Lodge was on a rainy day. The whole Zebra herd, including the little one, crossed the road right in front of us.

Unique Stripe Pattern of Zebras

Each Zebra has a unique stripe pattern that is unlike any other. When in danger, the herd will stick together – to confuse predators with their stripes – as this makes it hard for the hunters to distinguish one Zebra from the other.

Gestation Period – Zebra

12 months

Female Zebras give birth to a Baby once a year. There is no certain time / season for mating. The newly born foal will be on its feet within a few minutes. A Zebra can live up to 20 years in the wild – if it is lucky not to get eaten.
