“I've never seen anything like this up close before”, says Rhulani’s head guide Alasdair. The toad in the photo is a male calling to attract a mate. His inflated throat sac acts as a resonator, amplifying his call so females can find him during the breeding season. Males typically call from the water’s edge, using their voices both to draw in females and to compete with other males nearby. Alasdair: "And then a jump, and the female was there and they were producing little toads".
