Rhulani Insights 265 – A stripe bellied sand snake in camp

- Rhulani Insights, Wildlife

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

In today's blog, we welcome a very special guest to Rhulani Safari Lodge: a stripe-bellied sand snake, which has made itself comfortable somewhere among the sun-warmed stones near the lounge. Together with our ranger and assistant manager, Willem, we take a closer look at this fascinating animal.

I'm like a snake sleeping on a rock. I won't bother you unless you poke a stick at me.

- Harlan Ellison, American writer

As you know, we're in the wild in South Africa, so we welcome all kinds of animals. In this particular case, it's a snake that not all guests love, but perhaps in today's blog we can convince you a little of the beauty of these animals.

The sand-bellied sand snake is very common in southern Africa. It is a harmless, mildly venomous snake that plays an important ecological role by controlling small animal populations. While it has venom for hunting, it is not dangerous to humans, and bites are extremely rare and medically insignificant, so we see no reason to remove our special guest from its cozy hiding place.

This blog is also intended to inspire you to always keep your eyes open for the little surprises and to discover the beauty of nature in every corner when you are with us at the lodge.

Stay tuned for the next episode on 14 December as we send you Christmas greetings from Rhulani.
