As part of our ongoing sustainability journey and action plans as a Travelife Gold certified lodge, we have increased both our solar generation capacity and battery storage capacity by 25%. To support this growth, a new solar-panel carport was constructed, along with a larger battery room designed to accommodate the expanded energy storage system.

This investment brings us one step closer to greater energy independence and significantly reduces our reliance on diesel-powered generators, helping to protect the pristine environment that our guests come to experience.

Rhulani's Manager, Tom-Hendrik Basson, who closely oversaw the project on site, is excited about the long-term impact of the expansion."The install was done very neatly, pro-actively and finished more or less on time. I feel this was a great investment in the future of Rhulani and is once again a testament to our commitment of protecting the environment that our guests come to experience."

While the system is still undergoing final testing and fine-tuning, early results are highly encouraging. "The test phase is still undergoing and gave us a few sleepless nights; however, it is performing much better. I am very optimistic that once we have fine tuned it to the perfect settings, it will ultimately give us the result that we want of not using the generator throughout the night."

One of the most noticeable benefits will be the return of uninterrupted bushveld tranquillity. "Silence will also return to Rhulani where the generator will not make noise, although we might miss the ‘white noise’ effect it has on us once you got used to it," Basson jokes.

This project is another important milestone in our mission to minimise our environmental footprint while enhancing the guest experience. At Rhulani, sustainability is more than a commitment—it is an investment in the future of our wildlife, our community, and the unforgettable safari experiences we share with our guests every day.
