Lions on honeymoon..."Wow!"

  • May 16, 2023 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

We receive spectacular photos from our ranger Dean of a lion couple, which - as is not difficult to recognize - is on their honeymoon, as the bush experts call it. Extremely fascinating if you, as a guest, are lucky enough to witness the hustle and bustle of the big cats. But is it more likely or less likely to see it when on safari?

Every sighting is special and unique in itself, and so is this one. Our expert Dean says, "The lion honeymoon occurs about once every year, or maybe only once every two years. The female and male are then together 24/7".

So you really have to be lucky to hit the lion’s honeymoon time on your safari.

But if you are lucky enough, there is a very good chance that you will be able to witness the actual act, which is accompanied by lion roars, biting and scratching.

Dean then enlightens our guests by saying: “Lions mate frequently when a lioness is in estrous, as much as every 20 minutes extended over a period of 4 to 5 days.”

Usually the reaction of our guests covers the whole spectrum from "Wow!", "Oh my goodness!" to "Oh no!"

Take a look at the great pictures and maybe join us on the next safari?
