Rhulani Insights 263 – Using the spotlight
Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.
Our daily game drives take place in the evening, continuing into the night, giving us the opportunity to spot nocturnal animals. Our ranger, Dean, will then use a spotlight to scan the bushes and surrounding landscape.
Everything has its wonders, even darkness and silence, and I learn, whatever state I may be in, therein to be content.
In addition to driving the vehicle, spotting animals, entertaining the guests, and communicating with other vehicles via radio, using a spotlight to scan the surroundings is also an important part of a ranger's duties once night falls.
This skill, too, requires practice, as it allows rangers to spot animals more easily, whether by detecting movement in the bushes, an unusual shape in the trees, or the reflection of light in the animals' eyes.
Ranger Dean will share some insights with us today about driving at night and the world of nocturnal animals.
Stay tuned for the next episode on Sunday 16 November, when we show you how Rhulani’s reverse osmosis system works.
