Rhulani Insights 258 – The brown locust on the wall

- Rhulani Insights

Look behind the scenes at Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Depending on the amount of rain that has fallen during the rainy season, we encounter grasshoppers, or "locusts," which come in various colors. Today we talk to our small animal and insect expert, Dean, about a brown locust that has made itself comfortable on a wall.

I get inspiration from a lot of things around me - nature, hills, people, and even insects.

- Ruskin Bond, Indian author

The brown locust is a medium-sized insect in a monotypic genus Locustana. It is characterised by classic gregarious behavior with a discontinuous genetic variation resulting in the occurrence of several different forms on crowding. The mature locust has four wings, six legs with the hind pair large and strong, and modified for jumping. It has two large eyes on the sides of its head, and three tiny bead-like eyes on the front of the head.

Look at a brown locust today and be amazed at how it can easily cling to a vertical wall using the hooks on its feet.

Stay tuned for the next episode on 7 September when we join a training session from Africology.
