Rhulani Insights 062 - A new electric wire against the elephants

  • February 19, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Rhulani is a safari lodge in the middle of the bush, which lives in harmony with the surrounding nature, and there is nothing that separates Rhulani from the wilderness and the wild animals.

This is not quite true. There is an electrical wire around the lodge, which should at least keep the elephants away from our buildings and the guests. Not because elephants are more dangerous than other animals, such as lions or buffaloes, which can still pass under the electric fence. However, the elephants often give us headaches because they can cause relatively large damage, and they drink the water from the swimming pools especially in the dry season, by which we have to spend lots of money to buy big amounts of water.

It has been several weeks since we have installed a new system of electrical wire. Together with Sean we approach the wire, and a big elephant, who looks at us from the other side, seams to be amazed. We are very brave, and the system seems to work. We hope so ...
