Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.
It's not surprising that out here in the bush, surrounded by many potentially dangerous animals, we carry rifles for safety. As guests, you might occasionally see these rifles, for example, if they're on the dashboard of your vehicle during a regular game drive, or if a ranger takes them on a bush walk. But we actually never need our rifles.
A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of the user.
"It's really the very last resort for our safety, in case we encounter a wild animal while driving or walking," says Rhulani's ranger, Alasdair.
Firearms and their use in the Madikwe Game Reserve are subject to strict regulations. For the bush walks we offer as an additional activity, carrying a rifle is mandatory.
All rangers in Madikwe must regularly participate in shooting practice at the shooting range and be able to present a permit to carry a rifle. Alasdair tells us more in today's blog post.
Stay tuned for the next episode on 25 January when we discuss ways to conserve water.
