Rhulani Insights 032 - Walking to the room at night

  • August 09, 2015 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge and feel the bush.

As most guests already know, Rhulani is an unfenced lodge. This is not a failure, but a conscious decision. We do not want to put any artificial boundaries between the hotel and the bush experience. This means that theoretically animals of all kinds can pass at any time through the lodge area. So, it is quite possible that when you are on your way to your private chalet, you will enjoy an extraordinary and surprising meeting with an African animal.

During the day, this is not a problem at all. As the bush is open, there is good visibility, and you can see the animals from a safe distance. Animals usually do not come too close during the day. The lodge is busy, and most of the animals rest. Since animals by nature do not attack as long as they do not feel threatened, they will just walk away when they notice you. So, don’t worry: walking around on our pathways is completely safe. Just look around, don’t be scared, and maybe you will get a special photo.

However, when it gets dark, you should be more careful. The lodge gets quiet, the temperature goes down, and most of the animals start to move. As they usually see much better at night than humans, they will notice you much earlier than you would notice them, when you walk to your room. They could feel threatened. If in addition you as a “bush newcomer” do not know how to behave, you could get in trouble. For this reason, our guests are not allowed to walk around alone when it is dark. Your ranger will look after you and escort you to your chalet.

In today’s episode, experience with Rolf, who gets escorted by Thomas, the special night walk to Chalet No. 9, which is around 170 meters away from the main area. Feel the special atmosphere of complete darkness under the African sky, with a few steps through the bush.

“I will love the light for it shows me the way, yet I will endure the darkness because it shows me the stars.” – Og Mandino, Author
