July update: a super large herd of buffalo

  • August 05, 2017 | Rolf Steiner

The winter is slowly coming to an end, the temperatures at night are pleasantly cool, and during the day our guests enjoy "sunny South Africa" with spectacular experiences in the African bush. We look back on the animal statistics of the month of July.

July statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

As always, our field guides have registered the animal encounters after each game drive in a control file. We want to get a sense of how big the chances are to find the major wild animals (as there is no guarantee), and if we detect any changes to the past or new trends.

We find exceptional stability and excellent quality of game viewing on our game drives. Literally every day. Our guests get beautiful photographic opportunities and unforgettable memories.

In the month of July it was once again possible to meet four of the "Big 5" on every single game drive with a probability of over 50%. The ranking list: Elephant 80%, Lion 64%, White Rhino 60%, Buffalo 50%.

As we are in the middle of the dry season, the probability increases to discover big animal meetings at the waterholes and dams. In addition to the exceptional skills of our rangers to track the animals, it ultimately gives a certain security to find the animals at an obvious place. "We met a super large herd of buffalo, saw fighting lions, a leopard on a kill, and two leopard males in a little fight, which is rather unusual," tells Rhulani's Ranger Riaan.

With a 59% probability per drive, giraffe was found, which is a relatively high value. Other species of antelopes, such as impala, blue wildebeest, kudu or zebra, are so common that we do not register them in our statistics. Spotted hyena (31%), brown hyena (14%), black-backed jackal (29%), wild dog (12%) or cheetah (27%) are more rare.
