Rhulani Insights 048 - A termite mound in front of the terrace

  • June 26, 2016 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Within just a few weeks time, just in front of Rhulani's observation deck, this large mound of earth was created by hard-working termites. This termite mound forms now part of our lodge and stays exactly between the outside lounge and the waterhole where wild animals occasionally come to drink water.

A termite mound is an extremely interesting life system. Similar to an iceberg a small part of it can be seen over the surface. The majority is located under the ground. Termites live in a queens empire, where everyone has to perform a specific task. Although humans are generally disturbed by termites, they also play quite an important role in the whole ecosystem.

Today we learn from our ranger Sean more about the life of these little animals. Maybe next time you will make a stop when you pass by a termite hill, and then ask your ranger for more information. You will be amazed!

“It would seem that the ant works its way tentatively, and, observing where it fails, tries another place and succeeds.” – Richard Jefferies, Writer

Stay tuned for next episode on Sunday 10 July 2016 when a new thatched roof will be placed on Rhulani’s guest chalet.
