Rhulani Insights 222 – A Sausage Tree

  • April 07, 2024 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

In the entrance area of Rhulani there is a tree that attracts attention because of its large, long fruits. No surprise that this is called a “Sausage Tree.” But unlike real sausages, these tree fruits are pretty hard things. But let's let Dean tell you more about it.

The flowers hang down from branches on long flexible stems. The fruit is a woody berry, weighs between 5 and 10 kg and hangs down on the long, rope-like peduncles. The fruit pulp is fibrous, containing many seeds.

It's not a good idea to stand under this tree or park your car under it, and as Dean goes on to explain, this tree is of no great use to us humans, but the fruits contain good nutrients for certain animals in the bush.

“A fool sees not the same tree that a wise man sees.” – William Blake, English Poet

Stay tuned fort the next episode on 21 April when we look at our solar panels in detail.
