September update: one highlight after the other

  • October 02, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Every day there are new surprises and unique animal sightings in Rhulani as our statistics show. The September, which had just ended, was full of special events, so that one highlight after another followed. Here is our monthly summary.

September statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

One of the highlights: 3 female cheetahs arrived in Madikwe Game Reserve

The cumulation of special events and activities was even for us extraordinary. In addition to the routine safari program, our guests were able to benefit from special programs such as (please click on the activities to get more details):

Last but not least, the first rain drops fell on the very last day of September, by which the rainy season started much earlier than usual. Nature is pleased, and we too hope that this is a good sign for the generally critical water situation in Madikwe.

Let's take a look at the success of our game drives. First, the "Big 5": The frequency to spot them on a game drive of approximately 3.5 hours, remains stable at a high level: Elephant (92%), Lion (73%), Buffalo (55%), White Rhino (48%), and finally the elusive leopard (10%).

Our guests are especially pleased that they often find lions in very special situations. Often we discover them eating after having made a kill, or when they roar loudly, and there are also lion families with very small cubs, which is nice to see.

We were fortunate to see rather rare predators more frequently than usual, such as the cheetahs (22%), or the wild dog pack (18%), which we both watched for a while on the hunt for an antelope.

Now that the temperatures are getting warmer, our night drives are getting more interesting. So we have seen the rare Marsh Owl, and more and more often the chameleons come out from their hiding places.
