August update; Lots of animal interactions

  • September 02, 2016 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

It was not at all a calm winter month. "August was actually very busy but the sightings were very good too!" summarizes in a few words Rhulani's ranger Riaan the many game drives he did with our guests into the bush. There were lots of animals to see. Here is our August update from the bush.

`

August statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

Our male lion "Scarface" was killed in August

Buffalo: you see this Big 5 in 2 of 3 game drives

Besides the amount of animals we especially admired interesting interactions between them. "We saw twice the cheetahs trying to hunt, as well as the big wild dog pack in search of food," says Riaan. Unfortunately we could not witness those time a successful “live kill”.

But still there were many opportunities where our guests could watch the big cats eating: lions and cheetahs were encountered several times on a kill, and even a leopard was encountered four times on an impala. Once we even saw lions that were chased away from their prey by elephants.

There were also special rhino sightings. A white rhino with a baby calf was found three times, and a black rhino visited Rhulani's watering hole on the last day of the month.

A short look at the statistics confirms the consistently good values. After the lonely leader, the elephant (94% probability to discover it per drive), with practically identical likelihhod follow lion (68%), buffalo (66%) and white rhino (63%). It is striking that the leopard was found with 23% probability more often than in previous months.

August was above all marked by the death of one lion male, which dominated the territory around Rhulani with his brother. He did not survive a fight with other male lions (we reported about this event).

Elephant is our clear number one
