Baby Animals in Madikwe - Part II: Warthog Piglets at my Wendy House

  • February 14, 2017 | Rhulani safari Lodge

For a long while, I tried to get a picture of the Warthog Mom with their little Piglets. I spotted them at Rhulani’s waterhole and also while driving from the Wonderboom Gate towards the lodge - or even at the pool area. But I either didn’t have a camera with me or they were running away too quickly. Now, I finally succeeded.

I spotted the little Warthog Piglets on Game Drives already. They were running around like crazy, having fun in the Madikwe bush. They were just too far away. Recently, I was sitting in the Outdoor Lounge at Rhulani Safari Lodge and they showed up near the pool area – probably all the Marula fruits that fell down to the floor attracted them.

I ran back to fetch my camera – but too late. They were long gone when I came back.

The Piglets visited me at my Wendy House

Now, I finally managed to take some photos and a short video – and I didn’t even have to walk anywhere. I was busy writing a new Blog article at my Wendy House and looked outside through the glass door – and there they were: 3 little Warthog Piglets right in front of my House, together with their Mom. In the evening, they also visited the other staff quarters at Rhulani Lodge and the parking lot – before running away again.

Later, I saw them again on the road in front of the lodge.

Gestation Period – Warthog

5-6 months

Warthogs usually give bith in the rainy season between December – February. So now is a good time to come and visit Rhulani Safari Lodge in Madikwe if you would like to see the little “Pumbas”. The litter is normally around 2-4 piglets but can also go up to 8.

I think this Warthog Mom had 5 little Piglets in the beginning. I think only these 3 survived. I hope they are going to make it “big”.

You can have a look at the 3 Warthog Piglets and their Mom in the video.
