Baby Animals in Madikwe – Part VI – Baby Rhino

  • March 23, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

While venturing for the Wild Dogs lately, we also saw a Baby Rhino - my first one in Madikwe Game Reserve so far. The little one definitely gets its own Blog Article.

I wanted to see a Baby Rhino for a very long while – now it finally happened, completely unexpected. On our way back from the Wild Dogs we bumped into a lot of other interesting widlife as well – including a Baby Rhino, which was happily grazing with its mom.

They both also walked to a mini waterhole in Madikwe where we could see the beautiful reflection of both Rhinos in the water. The same baby Rhino showed up a few days later on another Evening Safari with Rhulani – strolling through the high grass with its parents.

Gestation Period – Rhino

15 months

When a Baby Rhino is born it weighs about 50kg. After 1 year the first little horn develops and after 2-3 years the 2nd horn. The Baby Rhino we saw is about 2 years old. I wish the little one – and all other Rhinos - a very long and happy life! (#Save TheRhino)

I am not sure why certain wildlife species in Madikwe were waiting 3 months to show themselves to me (e.g. Wild Dogs and Baby Rhinos) – but I guess there was a good reason.

I am still waiting for a Pangolin to appear – and I am sure it will happen ☺
