December update: Elephant with a 100% score

  • January 07, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Madikwe has the reputation of being a home for the wild dogs. However, as the statistics prove, it is a perfect reserve to spot elephants. Here is the animal sighting report from December.

Giraffes were seen with 80% probability on each game drive

December statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

Green landscapes, blu sky and lots of elephants

According to our registrations, there were elephants to see on every single game drive. This has to do with the large number of these animals in the park. Moreover, these big mammals are not afraid of game drive vehicles, and they can hardly be overlooked because of their size.

Very positive is that three other "Big 5" representatives are also found with a high likelihood: Lion (71% chance per drive), White Rhino (65%) and Buffalo (61%).

We are a bit disappointed that the shy leopard has not shown up in December. This was compensated by a high number of cheetah sightings, which occurred in one of three game drives. On one occasion, we saw two cheetahs on a kill.

But safari is not just about quantities and the Big 5. None of our guests was disappointed. The rain and the colorful nature have brought beautiful landscapes to us, a lush green scenery, with a blue sky and some fascinating sunsets. Unforgettable was the impressive Kwandwe-Lion, which was roaring right next to our vehicle.

Other animals also provided highlights. Very often we got to see the beautiful giraffe (81%), sometimes the black-backed jackal with tiny little babies (37%). Rarer animals like the African Civet or a spotted eagle owl also belonged to the discoveries of December.
