March update: Good rains and good sightings

  • April 04, 2018 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

By the end of March we are at the end of the summer and the rainy season. The weather was pretty crazy, but all our safaris took place, although sometimes not on all the earthy roads of Madikwe and sometimes at unusual times. Our guests enjoyed it anyway. Welcome to our monthly report from the bush.

March statistics: Frequency of animal encounters per game drive

"Is this summer or winter here?" asked a guest humorously, wrapped in our rain poncho and woolen blanket. In fact, we sometimes had unusually low temperatures for the season, and quite a bit of rain fell in this region region that is known to be very dry.

However, as the safaris still took place and the animal observations were at very good quality, our guests accepted the whims of the weather with a smile. And we are glad that we can start with a certain amount of water in the soon-to-begin dry period. We've even set up new water tanks this month to collect rainwater from the roofs in the staff area.

What's new about our wildlife viewing? It immediately becomes apparent that it was once more difficult to find buffalo herds. We only managed to find them in 13% of all game drives, which is the lowest ever quota for buffalo. Apart from that, we saw the Big 5 with the usual high probabilities. Above all, the elephant (85%), lion (73%) and the white rhino (50%). Once we found a black rhino very relaxed, so we could enjoy watching it, which was very special.

Even the elusive leopard showed up with a 15% likelihood, which is a good value. We found twice a leopard mum with a cub.

Of the other predators we saw different cats and dogs very close to our vehicle. Cheetah (18%), Wild dog (10%), black-backed jackal (74%), brown hyena (12%), spotted hyena (3%). Even the giraffe lovers were not disappointed. In 2 out of 3 game drives we saw at least one of these largest land mammals.
