March update: The sunsets are back!

  • April 06, 2017 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

March was for us a sort of "transitional-month" between the end of the summer season, and the upcoming April with a holiday period in South Africa and Easter. Our guests enjoyed a bit more quiet days, in perfect climate, wonderful surroundings and as always with unforgettable animal observations. Welcome to our monthly update from the bush.

A special sightings: an African Wildcat

As the rainy season is now over, the sky above us was clear most of the time, which has given us many sunny days and, above all, fantastic sunsets. So our sundowners during game drives, with a glass in hand offered by Rhulani Safari Lodge, were often a special moment of the day.

And how about the chance to find animals during the 3.5 hours of game drive? Looking at the so-called "Big 5", our success rate in March is as follows:

  1. Elephant - 98%
  2. White Rhino - 74%
  3. Lion - 67%
  4. Buffalo - 44%
  5. Leopard - 9%

One of the great experiences was a herd of more than 200 elephants at Tlou Dam. Lions were often seen on a kill, and once they just had captured a giraffe. Moreover, we noticed that the mating season for the lions is fully running.

Other animals of great interest (excluding the very common antelopes like impala, wildebeest, kudu, etc.) were found by our qualified rangers with the following probabilities:

  • Giraffe - 40%
  • Black backed jackal - 26%
  • Wild dog - 13%
  • Spotted Hyena - 8%
  • Brown Hyena - 5%
  • Cheetah - 5%
  • Black rhino - 4%

Madikwe is home to many different animals. Having a look at those we do not see every day, we had a Serval, an African Wild Cat, a Spotted Eagle Owl and an Aardwolf.
