Rhulani Insights 007 - At Rhulani's waterpump

  • May 18, 2014 | Rolf Steiner

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

Electricity and water - a natural commodity in daily life is in a safari lodge often a challenge. No more water at the lodge can result in a severe crisis.

At Rhulani's waterpump

Especially in this north-western region of South Africa, where there are long winter months without rain and sometimes droughts over years, the water supply must be constantly monitored. Rhulani has no water pipeline, but must pump the water out of own boreholes from 50 meters deep to the surface and then into the water tanks right behind the lodge.

Together with Rhulani's manager Grant we see how such a borehole looks like, and we are just about to fix a little defect in the pump. It happens quite often that the water pipe leaks somewhere. Either because the water pipes underground rub on the rocks, or a thirsty elephant smells the water in the pipe and starts to dig it out - that's the nature!

“Nature is not a place to visit. It is home.” – Gary Snyder, Poet

Stay tuned for next episode on Sunday 1 June 2014, where we have a look at Rhulani's game drive vehicle, with which the guests enjoy the daily safaris.
