Rhulani Insights 034 – The water situation in Madikwe

  • October 04, 2015 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

"Water" is one of the most important topics for a safari lodge. A lodge without water can quickly run into a crisis situation. Rhulani gets the water from the ground, through deep boreholes, to ensure a smooth daily operation  in the kitchen, in the garden and in the guest chalets.

Madikwe is located in a zone where water is very scarce, and where the rainy season in summer is very short and with low water volumes. Here it is even more important to deal very sparingly with water. This is a challenge not only for lodges. In dry winter season, also the animals of Madikwe must often walk long distances to locate the few water points for a drink.

Today we find ourselves at Thliu Dam, one of the largest and most beautiful waterholes in Madikwe, and where we find a herd of elephants and some buffalos hanging around. We learn from Jaces how this dam is supplied with water, and we see how smart the animals are to find the fresh water source.
