Rhulani Insights 038 - Rhulani's water tanks

  • December 13, 2015 | Rhulni Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of Rhulani Safari Lodge.

On the west side of Madikwe, where Rhulani is located, there is no water dam, no pipeline, and rainwater is missing most of the time. So where does Rhulani get the water from?

From different boreholes, which are in the surrondings of the lodge, the water is pumped up from the earth and transported through pipes into our water tanks, which are located in the backyards. Due to persistent drought, we have to be very careful with our water consumption, and rarely do we have "full tanks". Sometimes we lose even the little water because an elephant breaks a pipe. Thus, water is one of the most valuable assets for us.

“No water, no life. No blue, no green.” – Sylvia Earle, Explorer

In today's episode, we inspect the water tanks and learn more about the water management at the lodge. Here, we control every day, how much water we have available to ensure the lodge operation including the kitchen, the cleaning, the garden, the swimming pools and the consumption in the guest chalets. When we are short on water, maybe we can pump a little extra or we order water from outside. This is, however, an expensive solution and is therefore used only in extreme emergencies.
