Rhulani Insights 054 - The wild dogs of Madikwe

  • October 02, 2016 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Look behind the scenes of ‪Rhulani Safari Lodge‬.

Our today’s blog is dedicated to a very special animal which made Madikwe famous especially in the early years. The "wild dog" was virtually extinct about two decades ago, but a new popultion was built at this place thanks to good protection and reproduction measures, so that this beautiful predator can be seen again in many places around the world.

But still many safari guests choose the Madikwe Reserve to admire wild dogs in the wild. Currently the park has one large pack that every day runs long distances and which makes it hard to find them. In today's game drive with ranger Sean we are lucky. We find the pack in beautiful evening light. Sean, meanwhile, tells us more about the situation about that still endangered animal.

“If the pack expands and move into unprotected areas like farm land, they will often be killed by farmers and ranchers who protect their domestic animals.” – Our Endangered World

Stay tuned for next episode on Sunday 16 October 2016 when we discover another stunning animal in the bush: a spotted hyena.
