When Willem saw Munye for the first time

  • July 23, 2022 | Rhulani Safari Lodge

Leopards are quite shy and well camouflaged big cats and are therefore among the most spectacular sightings on a safari. At Rhulani we are fortunate to have a fairly laid back leopard male nearby, we call him Munye. But also Munye is moody and we haven't seen him very often lately. Rhulani’s young ranger Willem has heard a lot about Munye but had actually never seen him. Until recently. And the first time was pretty special.

Guests on the vehicle often ask about the leopards and some of them even know "Munye" from our social media posts and blogs.

This time, too, Willem was driving through the wilderness every day. Spectacular sightings, fascinating nature, happy guests, as usual, but no trace of Munye.

Willem has been working in Rhulani since December last year, has seen a few leopards, but he has never found the "famous" Munye himself.

This is how this safari goes by for the guests without being able to find the capricious big cat. On the last day, bags packed, check-out done, Willem drives the departing guests to the nearby airstrip. The plane from Federal Air plane is ready for departure.

Goodbye, maybe Munye will be found next time. There always has to be a reason to come back.

The plane takes off over the dirt runway and soon disappears into the light blue sky. Willem makes his way back to Rhulani. And then, quite unexpectedly, he discovers a characteristic spotted head with wild, crystal-clear eyes, quite well hidden under a bush. It's Munye!

"He was well hidden, but I still wanted to take my first picture," said Willem happily. And he is even more pleased that the spell has now been broken and that he will find Munye next time for our guests. Promised!
